Our School
Harston & Newton Primary first opened its doors in 1877. One of our Key Stage 2 classes is still taught in the original Victorian building, which also houses our music room.
Our Classes
We are a small village school. Numbers vary year to year, but we always ensure the best possible arrangements for our pupils. From September 2025, our structure will be:
- Reception class
- Mixed Year 1/2 class
- Mixed Year 3/4 class
- Mixed Year 5/6 class
This structure allows us to deliver a clear and well‑planned curriculum.
Pre‑School
Our Harston & Newton Pre‑School has been part of the community for over 30 years and has been run by the school governors since 2006. Located in the Key Stage 1 building, it has strong links with our Reception class.
- Open daily during term time: 8.55 a.m. – 3.00 p.m.
- Timings align with the school day, making drop‑off and pick‑up easy for families.
Our Grounds
We are lucky to have extensive outdoor space, including:
- A large playing field
- A dedicated forest school area
- A spacious asphalt playground
- A heated outdoor swimming pool used in the summer term
Admissions
We are proud to be part of The CAM Academy Trust, a partnership of schools across South Cambridgeshire and Huntingdon. Admissions are managed by the Cambridgeshire Admissions Team in line with local authority policy.
- Children start school in the September of the year they turn five.
- Applications open in October and close in early January.
- Priority is given to children living in our catchment area.
- Our PAN for Reception in September 2026 will remain at 15.
If applications exceed available places, the local authority will allocate places based on published criteria. Parents can appeal if a place is refused. We always aim to welcome village children where possible, while keeping class sizes manageable (Reception and KS1 classes cannot exceed 30 pupils).
Before Starting School
We work closely with families to ensure every child’s transition into school is smooth, happy, and exciting. Whether joining Reception or moving up through the year groups, our priority is to make children feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.
